Mask Mandates in British Columbia: The Facts
As of July 26, 2024, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s top doctor, announced the end of the COVID-19 public health emergency, which has been in place since March 2020. This decision marks a significant shift in how the province is handling COVID-19 regulations and public health measures.
Healthcare settings
It is not mandatory to wear a COVID-19 mask in healthcare settings in B.C. The mask mandate was dropped by the provincial government on April 8, 2024.
- Note: Although the universal mask mandate has been lifted, individual healthcare settings may implement their own policies regarding mask use, particularly in areas with vulnerable populations or where there is a higher risk of infection.
Workplaces
Workplaces in B.C. are not required to enforce COVID-19 mask mandates. Employers have the discretion to implement their own mask policies, and they must accommodate employees who cannot wear masks due to medical reasons.
Public spaces and events
There are no COVID-19 mask mandates for public spaces in B.C., including:
- Schools
- Public transit
- Restaurants, pubs, bars or nightclubs
- Sports events
- Personal gatherings
- Organized gatherings and events, like weddings and funerals
- Religious worship services
- Exercise and fitness activities
- Swimming pools
People are encouraged to wear masks based on personal preference and comfort, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces.
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination in B.C.
You do not have to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a vaccine card to access services and venues in B.C. The requirement was lifted as of April 8, 2024. While vaccination remains strongly encouraged, it is no longer mandatory to show proof of vaccination for entry into public spaces or to participate in various activities.
