Return-to-Office Mandates Reportedly Costing Some Workers $55 a Day

A note saying

In-office days are costing some workers approximately $55 in out-of-pocket spending, according to recent research by Owl Labs.

Based on the findings, expenses typically include roughly:

  • $15 for commuting
  • $9 for parking
  • $13 for breakfast or coffee
  • $18 for lunch

“Return-to-office is a compensation choice. Make it a fair choice, and the office becomes a magnet rather than a mandate,” workplace expert Gleb Tsipursky said in his analysis of Owl Labs’ research.

“Tell a salaried employee to come back 3 or 4 days a week, and you have quietly lowered [their] take-home value.”

The report also found the average commute to the office is currently around 31 minutes — adding a significant time investment on top of financial strain.
