Helping Staff Struggling with Tinnitus: 2026 Study Recommends “Targeted Interventions”

Researchers around the world are trying to determine the best way to tackle tinnitus in the workplace — ensuring it doesn’t affect an individual’s employment.

A recent tinnitus study, published in the journal Brain Sciences, found:

  • 11% of respondents have had to reduce their working hours
  • 7% of respondents were ultimately forced to resign

“Our findings highlight that, for some individuals, tinnitus is far more than a persistent sound; it can be a barrier to maintaining stable employment and workplace well-being,” Dr. Eldre Beukes, the study’s lead author and associate professor of audiology at Anglia Ruskin University, said.

“Workplaces should recognize tinnitus as a condition that can affect productivity and may require reasonable adjustments. Policies supporting flexible work patterns, access to hearing related technologies, and improved awareness among managers could make it easier for those affected to stay in work.”

The researchers found that “targeted interventions,” such as an internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) program, helped improve job performance and endurance.
