People with Parkinson’s Less Likely to Enjoy Pleasant Smells, 2026 Study Finds
Sniffing a lemon could actually help individuals determine if they have Parkinson’s disease — seriously.
Noam Sobel at the Weizmann Institute of Science and his colleagues conducted a “smell perception study” comprised of 94 people, most of whom were in their late 50s to late 60s.
The researchers used 3 jars:
- 1 jar contained a high concentration of the odorant citral, which smells like lemon
- 1 jar contained a mix of the aromatic ingredients (asafoetida and skatole) that was concentrated to the point where it smelt faecal
- 1 jar was empty
According to the findings, those with Parkinson’s disease sniffed nearly 2% longer in response to the unpleasant smell compared with the citrus jar, whereas those in the other groups cut their sniff duration by 11-12%.
While health experts believe the results are encouraging, tests on a larger group of people are needed to help validate this approach.

Disability Benefits for Parkinson’s in Canada
Parkinson’s disease can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties — even with appropriate treatment.
For Canadians who can’t work due to this debilitating condition, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How These Benefits Help
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving Parkinson’s disease — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
