Build Canada Homes on Track to Become Crown Corp.: Key Employee Takeaways

What’s Happening at Build Canada Homes?

The Government of Canada has introduced legislation that would make its housing agency, Build Canada Homes, a Crown corporation — giving it land acquisition authority, as well as the ability to partner with private developers.

Housing Minister Gregor Robertson said the existing Canada Lands Company, a Crown corporation that redevelops federal properties, would be folded into Build Canada Homes.

“The clear commitment our government is making here today is to build affordable housing, and this has tragically been ignored by both provincial and federal governments,” Robertson told reporters on Feb. 5, 2026.

Some experts believe the move will add a layer of separation to the federal agency — making it less susceptible to government interference.

Potential Impact on Employees

If Build Canada Homes becomes a Crown corporation, it’s possible that the agency could restructure its operations and cut jobs.
