Bell Media Cuts 60 Positions Across Canada Amid Shift to Digital Media
Bell Media has confirmed that 60 positions were eliminated as part of its ongoing transformation toward digital media, according to The Canadian Press.
Sara McLaren, director of communications at Bell Media, said the layoffs did not impact newsgathering or reporting roles, though the union representing affected employees disputes that characterization.
Journalists and Support Staff Affected Across Canada
In a news release, Unifor said the layoffs affected 20 of its members, including 11 journalists working in:
- Toronto
- North Bay, Ontario
- Halifax
- Calgary
Unifor also said the job cuts extended beyond journalism roles, impacting:
- Traffic co-ordinators
- Schedulers
- Promotional co-ordinators
Job Cuts Criticized
Unifor national president Lana Payne said the cuts “strike at the heart of Canadian journalism,” and that the layoffs could have been avoided if journalist tax credits had been expanded to include broadcasters.
