Woman Seriously Hurt After Cycling Into Waterlogged Construction Pit

What Happened?

A Montreal woman sustained serious injuries after unknowingly cycling into a deep, waterlogged construction pit.

“[On Nov. 7 at 8am ET,] I was riding my bike as normal, but through multiple puddles. And there’s been a lot of construction on Thimens [Boulevard],” Darlene Demchuk told CTV News.

“But I wasn’t aware that I was driving into a puddle that was actually more like a pool.”

Surveillance footage of the accident showed an uncovered work site in the shared bike-bus lane. While 3 upright pylons blocked the lane beside the pit, going around them would’ve meant cycling in traffic.

Alan De Sousa, mayor of Montreal’s St-Laurent borough, told reporters that his team secured the site as soon as they heard about the incident.

“The cones represent a signal to motorists, cyclists, [and to] pedestrians that [it’s an] area that’s not to be traversed,” De Sousa said.

Demchuk’s injuries were so severe that she requires facial reconstruction surgery.
