Ottawa Unveils 2025 Federal Budget, 40,000 Public Service Jobs Being Cut
What’s Happening?
The federal government revealed in its 2025 budget that it plans to axe approximately 40,000 public service jobs “by 2028-29.”
“Canadians have been tightening their belt for quite some time, and it’s quite natural that [Ottawa] do the same,” Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne told reporters on Nov. 4.
Many of the details related to spending cuts will be revealed over the coming months by individual departments.
The workforce reduction is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plan to find nearly $60 billion in internal savings.
