Show Notes
- Temporary layoffs and entitlements: Employers are not permitted to place employees on a temporary layoff without their consent. Employees do not have to accept being placed on a layoff or wait a period of time in order to pursue their severance entitlements. Employees that agree to an initial layoff ensure their employer can place them on another layoff in the future.
- Fired during probation period: Employees are not automatically placed on probation at the start of employment. Employees must agree to a probation period in their initial employment contract. Regardless of acceptance of probation, employees cannot be terminated after voicing complaints about health and safety.
- Expectations after maternity leave: Employees returning from maternity or parental leave cannot be penalized for taking a leave. It is considered discriminatory for penalizing or terminating employees due to taking leave. Employees should initially convey their concerns to their employer in writing.
