Show Notes

  • Workplace relationships and code of conduct: There is technically nothing wrong or illegal about a workplace relationship between consenting employees. Many workplaces have decided to implement disclosure policies. A common issue that arises with workplace relationships is typically a power imbalance between a superior and a subordinate.
  • Pushed to retire by an employer: Employees in Ontario do not have to retire by a certain age; there is no mandatory retirement. Employers cannot push an employee to resign or retire. In some cases, employers could be seen as discriminating against employees due to their age. Discriminatory terminations are illegal and employers could face human rights damages.
  • An employee is given part-time hours instead of full-time: Employers do not have the ability to impose major changes to the terms of employment without an employee’s consent. A major change, like a cut to hours or pay, can result in a constructive dismissal. Employees do not have to accept the proposed changes and should speak to an employment lawyer.
