Show Notes
- Employee recruited by another company and terminated: Employees that are terminated from a new employer after being recruited will be owed enhanced severance pay. The previous years of service at the prior employer will have to be taken into account. Employees should seek legal advice if terminated in order to determine if their severance package is adequate.
- Overtime hours and compensation: In certain industries, there are exemptions from overtime hours and compensation. In most industries employees that work over 44 hours a week are owed overtime pay.
- Medical leave and employee rights: All employees are entitled to take medical leave if they have the support of a treating doctor. It is not up to an employer in order to approve a medical leave of absence. Employers are not entitled to know detailed medical information, such as a diagnosis, but are permitted to know a prognosis.
- Employee notice is given and unpaid wages: Employees are within their rights to first contact their employer internally to determine the next steps to resolve complaints regarding unpaid wages. Employees can also file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour for unpaid wages.
