Show Notes
- Qualifying for LTD with long-COVID-19: As long-COVID-19 is still considered relatively new, symptoms can be considered in various different ways by treatment professionals. Many claimants with long-COVID-19 have physical conditions as well as mental health illnesses as a result of contracting the virus. Claimants should be as detailed as possible when applying for LTD so that all elements and symptoms are considered.
- Returning to work and cutting off of LTD benefits: Claimants returning to work full-time in the same capacity that they did before taking disability leave will likely no longer receive LTD benefits. Often, insurance companies will propose a return to work program when they believe claimants no longer need to be on LTD. Claimants should listen solely to the advice of their treating doctors on their return to work and the restrictions required in order to return successfully.
- Asked to apply for CPP Disability and pay the insurer: Most disability policies will state that claimants that receive other sources of income related to their disability, like CPP Disability, ensure credit is given to the insurance company. Ultimately, the disability policy outlines the terms and conditions that claimants continue to receive benefits.
- Losing health benefits while on LTD if terminated: Disability benefits are typically tied to employment. Claimants that are terminated should be aware that their extended health benefits might end as they are no longer employed. It is important for those on long-term disability leave to consider if there is a cap to their health coverage depending on how long they have been away from work.
