Toronto Police No Longer Responding to Minor Accidents

If you find yourself involved in a fender bender within the City of Toronto, you won’t be able to reach out to the police for assistance. Starting Tuesday, March 29th Toronto Police will no longer respond to minor accidents or collisions that result in broken bumpers, dented panels, and minor injuries.

Police responded to nearly 64,000 collisions in 2015 alone. Minor fender-benders made up almost 70% of those accidents.

Toronto police are taking this approach to free up their officers for more serious duties.

Police recommend that if you experience a minor accident, proceed directly to the nearest collision reporting centre.

Officers will still attend a minor crash if:

– A criminal offences was committed
– Drugs or alcohol were involved
– A pedestrian or cyclist was struck
– The resulting injuries require immediate hospitalization.

How Does This Affect YOU?

This change in protocol by Toronto Police does raise some concerns.

Often times when a motorist is involved in a minor accident, they experience minor injuries, such as whiplash or soft tissue damage.

Sometimes these injuries can take days, weeks, even months to develop, leaving the recipient in a great deal of pain. These seemingly trivial afflictions can grow worse over time if not properly treated.

Police officers are a reliable resource when it comes to collecting information on the parties involved in a collision, and determining the cause of the accident.

The task of reporting minor accidents to a collision reporting centre can be a difficult one. In fact, there are only two such locations in all of Toronto: one in the northwest corner of the city, the other in Scarborough.

If you are involved in an accident, it is crucial that you record as much information about the crash, including details of what took place, the other driver’s licence, vehicle and insurance information, photographic evidence of the damage, and contact information of any witnesses to the crash.
