Steven Guilbeault Resigns as MP, Vows to Continue Climate Change Fight
Is Steven Guilbeault Resigning?
Yes — former environment minister Steven Guilbeault announced on May 27, 2026 that he’s stepping down as a member of Parliament (MP) after nearly 7 years.
“This decision is the result of careful consideration,” Guilbeault said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to pursue my fight for environmental protection and the fight against climate change in a different way.”
The Montréal MP — who’s set to leave when the House of Commons rises for the summer — has vocally opposed attempts by prime minister Mark Carney government to strike an energy deal with Alberta that includes advancing a pipeline to the West Coast and weakening industrial carbon pricing.
Carney’s Response
In a statement, the prime minister thanked his fellow Liberal Party member for his contributions — listing Guilbeault’s efforts to protect the environment and other notable accomplishments while in government.
