Statutory Holidays in Newfoundland & Labrador

Newfoundland & Labrador’s Labour Standards Act (LSA) recognizes six public statutory holidays for employees working under provincial regulation. For statutory holidays, provincially regulated workers must receive a day off with pay from their employers.

What statutory holidays are recognized in Newfoundland & Labrador?

The following statutory holidays are recognized in Newfoundland & Labrador:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day (Canada Day)
  • Labour Day
  • Armistice Day (Remembrance Day)
  • Christmas Day

Statutory holidays not observed by Newfoundland & Labrador

There are seven holidays that are NOT statutory holidays in Nova Scotia: Family Day, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Civic Holiday, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving and Boxing Day.

While provincially regulated employers in Nova Scotia are not legally required to give employees those days off, they can voluntarily choose to do so.

What happens if a stat holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday?

In Newfoundland & Labrador, if a statutory holiday falls on an employee’s day off, they are entitled to the next working day off with pay. Alternatively, the employee can agree with the employer on another day to take off.
