On Aug. 28, 2025, a massive sinkhole opened up outside of East York Collegiate Institute in Toronto — causing commuter chaos and sparking safety concerns.
What Happened?
- City crews responded to reports of a broken watermain at the the busy intersection of Coxwell Avenue and Cosburn Avenue — south of O’Connor Drive — late in the evening on Aug. 27. By sunrise, a major sinkhole formed.
- “The incident led to street flooding, pavement damage and a sinkhole at the intersection. Two basement floods have been reported to the city so far,” the City of Toronto said in an emailed statement to CityNews.
- No injuries have been reported.
- Drivers and pedestrians are urged to avoid the intersection and follow posted detour signs.
