Toddler Dead, Several Hurt After Vehicle Crashes into Richmond Hill Daycare

On Sept. 10, 2025, a vehicle crashed into First Roots Early Education Academy in Richmond Hill.
What Happened?
- York police responded to reports that a vehicle crashed into a building in the area of Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive shortly after 3pm ET on Sept. 10.
- Several children and 3 staff members at the daycare have been taken to hospital. Officials confirmed that one toddler, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy, succumbed to his injuries and has been pronounced dead.
- Motorists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area.
Investigation Updates
The cause of the collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.

Mayor’s Response
Mayor David West called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy.”
“I’m a parent as well and a citizen of this community, and this is just a nightmare that parents would have,” West told CP24 at the scene.
“I’m here mostly just to let those know that are affected directly by this that we are a community that’s very compassionate, very caring, and we are standing absolutely with those folks, shoulder to shoulder.”
