Toddler Dead, Several Hurt After Vehicle Crashes into Richmond Hill Daycare

On Sept. 10, 2025, a vehicle crashed into First Roots Early Education Academy in Richmond Hill.


What Happened?

  • York police responded to reports that a vehicle crashed into a building in the area of Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive shortly after 3pm ET on Sept. 10.
  • Several children and 3 staff members at the daycare have been taken to hospital. Officials confirmed that one toddler, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy, succumbed to his injuries and has been pronounced dead.
  • Motorists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area.


Investigation Updates

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.

🔔 Anyone with information on the incident, including cellphone or dashcam footage, is asked to contact York police.


Mayor’s Response

Mayor David West called the incident an “unimaginable tragedy.”

“I’m a parent as well and a citizen of this community, and this is just a nightmare that parents would have,” West told CP24 at the scene.

“I’m here mostly just to let those know that are affected directly by this that we are a community that’s very compassionate, very caring, and we are standing absolutely with those folks, shoulder to shoulder.”
