Peterborough Petes Cut 3 Roles Amid Operations Overhaul

Hockey Canada, ice rink

What’s Going On at the Peterborough Petes?

The Peterborough Petes have laid off three full-time staff members as part of a restructuring of business operations aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing overlap — despite coming off two of the strongest seasons in the club’s 69-year history.

The move, announced internally and reported by the Peterborough Examiner, affects:

  • Adam King, Director of Marketing
  • Morgan Blaind, Marketing & Community Engagement Co-ordinator
  • Ian McGregor, Co-ordinator of Business Operations

The decision follows a strategic review led by General Manager and VP of Operations Mike Oke, who took over business-side responsibilities in October 2023 after the departure of former executive director Burton Lee to the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

“From an efficiency standpoint, I think there was a bit of overlap with some of the roles,” said Oke. “Obviously, there is a financial component as well.”

More Details

The layoffs are part of a broader reorganization designed to streamline roles without sacrificing service quality to fans or partners.

  • Under Lee’s leadership, the Petes expanded from four to 10 full-time business staff. This restructure reduces that number to six.
  • Oke emphasized the club’s strong ticket sales and championship success as signs the organization is not in financial trouble, but acknowledged rising costs in hockey operations.

The cuts are not tied to recent performance issues, but rather to long-term financial balancing and efficiency goals, especially after keeping staff on payroll through the COVID-cancelled 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons.
