900 CHML – NFL Will Fine Teams if Players Don’t Stand for National Anthem

NFL Players Taking A Knee

After months of debate over national anthem protests in the NFL, owners of all 32 teams have approved a new policy that requires players on the field to stand during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Players who do not wish to stand may stay in the locker room during the anthem, or will face fines if they sit or kneel while on the field.

Is this infringing upon the players’ free speech? Can an employer force an employee, while on company time, to follow their workplace rules, even if it does potentially touch on their personal rights? Do you have charter rights in the workplace?

Employment Lawyer Jon Pinkus, Associate at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, joined host Scott Radley on Global News Radio 900 CHML to discuss the rights of employers and employees with regards to the national anthem issue among NFL players.
