BC Mask Mandate Update: What You Need to Know in 2025

As of July 26, 2024, B.C.’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, officially declared the COVID-19 public health emergency over. This major update ended most pandemic-era health restrictions in the province – including the BC mask mandate.
If you’re wondering where masks are still used or allowed, and whether your employer can make you wear on, here are the facts.
Is There Still a Mask Mandate in B.C.?
There are currently no provincewide mask mandates in British Columbia.
Wearing a mask in public settings is a personal choice, and individuals are encouraged to make decisions based on their comfort level and risk factors.
When Did the B.C. Mask Mandate End?
The last provincewide mask requirements were officially dropped on April 8, 2024, for most indoor spaces, including healthcare settings.
This marked the first time since March 2020 that B.C. residents could fully access public services and venues without masks or vaccine passports.
Are Masks Required in Healthcare Settings in B.C.?
No. You are not required to wear a mask in hospitals or clinics across British Columbia.
However, individual healthcare facilities may set their own mask policies, especially in areas with vulnerable patients or during respiratory illness season.
Healthcare workers must still use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed.
