Lightspeed Layoffs: Latest Job Cuts And Severance Pay
Lightspeed Commerce announced another round of workforce reductions on October 13, 2026, affecting 250 roles across the company. The Montreal-based technology firm confirmed that the reductions include both employee layoffs and vacant positions it will no longer fill.
Lightspeed has not disclosed how many employees actually lost their jobs in October or how many Canadian workers were affected. The announcement follows several previous layoff rounds, including approximately 100 jobs cut earlier in 2026.
If you’ve been laid off by Lightspeed in Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia, your severance could be worth significantly more than your employer’s initial offer. Non-unionized employees can be entitled to up to 24 months’ pay, depending on their circumstances.
💡 Laid Off By Lightspeed? Don’t assume your first severance offer is all you’re owed. Your salary, bonuses, commissions and stock-based compensation can affect the value of your package. Contact Samfiru Tumarkin LLP before signing.

For employees who lose their jobs, severance rights depend on where they work, their employment contract and their individual circumstances.
Samfiru Tumarkin LLP helps non-unionized employees in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia pursue the severance compensation they’re owed.
How Much Severance Could Lightspeed Employees Receive?
Non-unionized Lightspeed employees in Ontario, Alberta and BC can be entitled to up to 24 months’ severance pay when fired or laid off. The minimum required by employment standards legislation isn’t necessarily the full amount they’re owed.
There is no automatic severance formula based on years of service. The full amount depends on factors such as:
- Age: Older employees may have greater difficulty finding comparable work.
- Length of service: Longer-serving employees can have significant severance entitlements.
- Position: Specialized technology, sales, management and executive roles can affect the amount.
- Availability of similar work: The time needed to find comparable employment matters.
- Employment contract: Termination clauses can affect entitlement, but not every clause is enforceable.
What About Stock Options, RSUs And Bonuses?
A Lightspeed severance package should not be assessed on salary alone. Depending on the employment agreement and compensation plans, the amount owed can include bonuses, commissions, benefits, stock options, restricted share units (RSUs) and other equity compensation.
For employees with stock-based compensation, termination can affect both vested awards and awards scheduled to vest during the applicable notice period.
Don’t assume your equity disappears simply because Lightspeed says your employment has ended. The terms of your employment contract, equity plan and vesting schedule must be reviewed together.

What Should You Do Before Signing A Lightspeed Severance Package?
Don’t sign a severance agreement until you know whether Lightspeed’s offer reflects everything you’re owed.
- Keep your termination documents. Save your termination letter, severance offer and any release you’re asked to sign.
- Gather your compensation records. Include your employment contract, bonus and commission plans, equity agreements and vesting schedules.
- Check stock-option deadlines. Some vested options have short exercise windows after termination. Don’t allow valuable options to expire while reviewing your severance.
- Have your package reviewed. Find out whether you’re owed more before accepting an offer or negotiating directly with the company.
⚠️ Your Employer’s Deadline Isn’t Your Legal Deadline: A deadline to accept a severance offer doesn’t automatically eliminate your right to seek proper compensation. However, signing a valid release can prevent you from claiming more. Get advice promptly, especially if your stock options or other benefits have separate deadlines.
Can You Negotiate More Severance From Lightspeed?
Yes. You don’t have to assume Lightspeed’s first offer is its best offer. If the package falls short of your legal entitlement, an employment lawyer can pursue additional compensation.
Having a lawyer review your package doesn’t mean committing to a lengthy court battle. Many severance disputes can be resolved through negotiation.

Lightspeed Layoffs: Common Questions
Did Lightspeed lay off 250 employees in October 2026?
Not necessarily. Lightspeed announced changes affecting 250 roles, including employees who lost their jobs and vacant positions that were eliminated. The company hasn’t disclosed the exact number of employee layoffs.
Does Lightspeed have to pay severance if it eliminates my job?
Lightspeed can eliminate positions for business reasons, but it must still meet its legal obligations to affected employees. Non-unionized employees may be owed substantially more than employment standards minimums, depending on their contract and circumstances.
Can I receive severance after only a short time at Lightspeed?
Yes. Short-service employees can still have significant severance rights. Your length of service is only one of the factors used to determine your entitlement.
Can Lightspeed cancel my stock options or RSUs when I’m fired?
Not automatically. Your rights depend on the equity plan, employment contract and applicable law. Awards that would have vested during your legal notice period may form part of your severance compensation. Check any exercise deadlines for vested options immediately.
What if I work for Lightspeed in Quebec?
Quebec has different employment and termination rules. Employees working in Quebec should seek advice from a lawyer qualified to advise on Quebec employment law. Samfiru Tumarkin LLP’s employment law team assists employees in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
What if I’m unionized?
Contact your union about your termination and any deadlines. Unionized employment disputes are handled through the collective agreement and grievance process. Our employment law team doesn’t represent employees in those disputes.
