Lightspeed Commerce announced on October 13, 2026, that it is cutting 250 roles as part of a company-wide restructuring. The Montreal-based technology company confirmed that the reductions include employee layoffs and vacant positions it will no longer fill.

Lightspeed has not disclosed how many employees actually lost their jobs or how many Canadian workers were affected. The company says the changes are intended to simplify operations and redirect spending toward customer growth and product innovation.

What Did Lightspeed Announce On October 13?

According to The Canadian Press, Lightspeed confirmed that 250 roles were affected by layoffs and the elimination of unfilled vacancies.

The 250 figure does not mean 250 employees were laid off. Lightspeed has not provided a breakdown showing how many roles were occupied and how many were vacant.

The company said the restructuring would help it operate more efficiently while continuing to invest in its products and customers.

Lightspeed spokesperson Stéphanie Princivil said additional information would be provided when the company reports its next quarterly financial results.

Which Lightspeed Employees Are Affected?

BetaKit reported that former Lightspeed employees in content and sales roles had publicly announced their departures.

However, Lightspeed has not released a complete list of affected departments, offices or positions.

The number of employees laid off in Canada has not been confirmed. Although Lightspeed is headquartered in Montreal, the 250-role figure should not be treated as a Canadian job-loss total.

Why Is Lightspeed Cutting Jobs?

Lightspeed says the changes will simplify its operations and free up resources for customer growth and product development.

The company has carried out several restructuring rounds in recent years while focusing more heavily on its North American retail and European hospitality businesses.

What Are The Severance Rights Of Laid-Off Lightspeed Employees?

Non-unionized Lightspeed employees in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia can be entitled to up to 24 months’ severance pay. An employer’s initial offer doesn’t necessarily reflect the full compensation owed.

Your severance pay depends on your employment contract and factors such as age, length of service, position and the availability of similar work.

For technology employees, bonuses, commissions, stock options, restricted share units (RSUs) and benefits can also affect the value of a severance package.

Don’t sign a severance agreement before having your offer reviewed. An employer’s acceptance deadline isn’t your legal deadline to pursue compensation. However, stock options and other benefits may have separate deadlines that require prompt attention.
