Is your credit card’s travel insurance enough? – MoneySense

Millions of Canadians have some travel health insurance coverage. This coverage may be through a policy attached to their credit card. It could exist in the form of a health plan sponsored by their employer. These policies can vary from one provider to the next.

Unfortunately, a vast majority of Canadians are unclear as to what protections their policy provides them. They just assume that they will be able to rely on insurance coverage if they find themselves in trouble abroad. In fact, a recent survey by the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada found that three-quarters of respondents truly understood their travel policy.

Many insurance plans come with restrictions tied to age, length of stay, treatment types and costs, and the individual’s pre-existing conditions.

MoneySense spoke to Sivan Tumarkin, a disability lawyer and partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, about how to find the best travel insurance to fit your personal situation.
