Nearly 75% of Young Canadians Primarily Rely on Online Job Boards: CFIB

Nearly three-quarters (73%) of young job seekers are primarily looking for employment opportunities online, according to a new report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

“We have two groups — [small businesses] and young job seekers — who are increasingly out of sync right now,” Molly MacCormack, CFIB policy analyst, said in a news release on the findings.

“Small businesses hire through trusted networks and look for soft skills, while many youth focus on online postings potentially overlooking the available roles that businesses need. As a result, they’re missing each other and fuelling high youth unemployment numbers.”

In addition to focusing on job boards, the organization’s report found:

  • More than 33% of young Canadians wouldn’t consider a minimum wage role.
  • Nearly 50% of respondents aren’t interested in jobs requiring heavy physical effort or overnight shifts.
  • Nearly 2-in-5 young Canadians would pass on employment opportunities involving “outdoor work.”
