Man, 22, Dead Following Hwy. 401 Collision West of Quinte West

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision on Highway 401 west of Quinte West on Jan. 3, 2026.

What Happened?

• The incident took place in the eastbound lanes of the highway between Big Apple Drive and County Road 30 around 10:40pm ET on Jan. 3.
• According to OPP, a passing vehicle collided with a vehicle that was parked close to the median in the westbound lanes. During the crash, a pedestrian was also struck.
• The pedestrian, a 22-year-old man from Chatham, was pronounced dead at the scene.
• No other injuries or fatalities have been reported.
• Highway 401 fully reopened between Big Apple Drive and County Road 30 as of 5am ET on Jan. 4.

Investigation Updates

The cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.
