Impact of Ontario Salary Disclosure Legislation: Global Interviews Employment Lawyer

Interview Summary

The Ontario provincial government has decided to introduce legislation that will seemingly impact the job market for both employers and employees.

Aiming to lessen pay discrepancies, employers would have to disclose salary ranges in job postings for positions paying less than $100,000. Artificial intelligence, if used during the hiring process, must also be disclosed.

What will this legislation mean for employees? Will this put employers hoping to hire staff at a disadvantage?

Jon Pinkus, a Toronto employment lawyer and Partner at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP, spoke with Global News’ Sean O’Shea about the legislation and what it could mean for employees.

Interview Notes

“A lot of employees go through the interview process and they get to the end, and they find out the salary is a fraction of what they were expecting,” said Pinkus.

Pinkus went on to explain that for most employees this legislation would be beneficial. “It could hike up wages because employers are forced to be honest about the wages they’re offering. They might offer a higher wage.”
