In the post MeToo era, traditional workplaces have grappled with cases of sexual harassment, and conversation about consent. For freelance workers, however, enforcing their rights and asking for support can be difficult. What steps could freelance workers take in order to report harassment and ensure allegations are properly investigated?

An Ottawa employment lawyer at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP spoke with Chatelaine to comment on freelance workers’ rights and allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

“When it comes to sexual harassment, freelancers have more options than they realize. These could include, in Ontario for instance, making a human rights complaint or filing a complaint with the Ministry of Labour. Too many freelancers,” the lawyer states, “are unaware that legal protections surrounding workplace sexual harassment are broad enough to cover all workers, not just full-time employees.
