What other seasonal events in Toronto are reopening in 2022?

Centre Island isn’t the only seasonal event in Toronto that is returning since shutting down early on in the pandemic. The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) will be reopening this year after an unprecedented two-year hiatus. It is scheduled to reopen on August 19, 2022, and will remain open until September 5, 2022.

What employment rights do seasonal workers have?

Seasonal workers at attractions such as Centreville Amusement Park and the CNE should keep in mind their employment rights when they’re let go. In general, seasonal workers are owed severance pay when they lose their job, much like other non-unionized employees. This applies whether the termination occurs at the beginning, middle or end of the working season.

How much severance is a short-service employee owed?

For employees who work several months on a specific project or event that consistently recurs annually, the expectation that they will be able to rely on that job each year becomes a term of their employment. If a new season begins and the employee is not returned to their position, their employment may be treated as having been terminated, resulting in a severance package. Even workers who have signed multiple fixed-term contracts may still be considered employees in the eyes of the law, and as such, would be owed severance pay.
