Carbon Dioxide Reportedly Capable of Removing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Proteins

Inhaling high levels of carbon dioxide intermittently for half an hour is capable of flushing proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease from the brain, according to recent studies.

“This dilation and constriction [caused by exposure to the gas changes] essentially serves as a pump that clears waste from the brain,” Dr. Sephira Ryman at the University of New Mexico told New Scientist.

“While carbon dioxide is being studied as a potential therapeutic tool, people should not try to inhale carbon dioxide at home…Breathing higher concentrations of carbon dioxide outside of these controlled settings can be dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening.”

Ryman added that medical professionals might explore developing a safe, portable way to receive the treatment at home.
