Canadian Steelmakers Warning of Steeper Job Cuts During US Trade War

What’s Happening?
The Canadian Steel Producers Association is calling on the federal government to ramp up its response to sweeping US duties — warning that the industry is preparing for steeper job cuts.
“We have significantly dropped shipments and have experienced close to 1,000 job losses to date and are preparing for thousands more,” Catherine Cobden, CEO of the association, said in a statement on June 26.
“We are concerned that the immediate measures [implemented by the federal government] fail to address the crisis we are in.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government recently introduced legislation to limit imports of steel and is currently planning to adjust its counter-duties on July 21.
