Fired and wondering what you’re owed? Toronto-based law firm Samfiru Tumarkin LLP has released a free iPhone and iPad app called the Severance Pay Calculator.

Designed to provide fast and accurate estimates of severance packages in Canada, the app aims to empower both employees and employers with critical legal information — at no cost.


Purpose of the App

Employment lawyer Lior Samfiru, one of the firm’s co-founding parnters, developed the app to address a widespread lack of awareness about termination rights across Canada. He made this discovery after launching a lawsuit against Ontario’s Ministry of Labour on behalf of two manufacturing workers who had adccepted only the legal minimum severance — unaware they were owed significantly more.

  • Most non-unionized employees terminated without cause are offered far less severance than what they’re actually owed — severance can be up to 24 months’ pay
  • Most people can’t afford legal advice immediately after losing a job.
  • The app aims to provide quick, clear, and free severance estimates.

How it Works

The Severance Pay Calculator functions by asking users a few basic questions, such as:

  • Age
  • Position
  • Length of employment

After some additional questions, the app then calculates a reasonable severance estimate. There’s also an “Employer Mode” for companies to estimate packages and avoid lawsuits from underpaid ex-employees.
