Is Algoma Steel Cutting Jobs in 2026?

Yes — Algoma Steel is set to eliminate hundreds of jobs on March 23, 2026.

However, Bill Slater, president of United Steelworkers Local 2724, believes that some employees will be kept on “because of some training requirements and other things.”

The steelmaker has confirmed that some of the 1,000 workers affected by the restructuring have voluntarily departed since the initial announcement on Dec. 1, 2025.
