AI Could Eliminate Millions of Jobs by 2050, Landmark Study Warns
A new study published by a variety of researchers, including those at the University of Toronto, warns that artificial intelligence (AI) could eliminate millions of jobs by 2050 — even without a dramatic acceleration in the technology’s capabilities.
“[Canada is] already seeing fewer positions in clerical and administrative work, because a lot of those tasks are being complemented by AI,” Tricia Williams, research director at the Future Skills Centre, told Canadian Affairs earlier this year.
Under the study’s “rapid progress” scenario, where AI beats human performance for most tasks by 2030, the prediction is that labour force participation could fall to just 55% by 2050.
“AI adoption isn’t really rocketing ahead in Canada [specifically,] to put it mildly,” Chris Roberts, director of social and economic policy at the Canadian Labour Congress, also told Canadian Affairs recently.
“But that doesn’t mean we’re immune.”
