“We Will Need Fewer People”: Amazon Expects AI to Shrink Corporate Workforce

What’s Happening at Amazon?
Amazon expects its corporate workforce to shrink in the coming years as it adopts more artificial intelligence (AI) tools and agents.
“Today, we have over 1,000 Generative AI services and applications in progress or built, but at our scale, that’s a small fraction of what we will ultimately build,” CEO Andy Jassy said in a memo to staff on June 17.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.”
In the meantime, Jassy is encouraging employees to experiment with AI tools and figure out how to “get more done with scrappier teams.”
AI Upheaval Ahead?
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, told Axios in a recent interview that tech leaders and politicians need to stop “sugar-coating” the economic carnage AI tools and agents are expected to cause.
Amodei believes Generative AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs in the next 1-5 years.
