Billy Joel’s brain disorder diagnosis: Key takeaways for Canadians

What’s going on with Billy Joel?
Beloved musician Billy Joel is cancelling all of his upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
“This [brain disorder] has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance” Joel’s team said in a statement to Rolling Stone.
“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.”
The musician’s last concert took place on Feb. 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Can Canadians get disability benefits for NPH?
For Canadians who can’t work due to this debilitating brain disorder, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How do these benefits help?
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving NPH — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
