OPP: Distracted driving deaths up 40% from 2023

An empty intersection, typically used by cars, trucks, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) claim that fatal collisions caused by distracted driving are up 40 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Report details

  • OPP say 63 people have been killed in collisions this year where inattentiveness was the main cause–up from 43 deaths in 2023.
  • Sgt. Sami Nasr told CTV News that most of the cases have involved cellphones.

Advice from police

OPP are reminding motorists that distracted driving fines can be as high as $1,000 and include a three-day suspension for a first offence.

“You can use the touch-free features on the motor vehicle, but you just can’t touch your phone while driving,” Sgt. Nasr said.
