Siemens Slashes 4,100 Jobs in Gamesa Wind Turbine Division

Technology similar to what Siemens Canada manufactures.

What’s happening at Siemens?

Siemens has announced plans to lay off 4,100 employees, representing approximately 15% of its workforce in its Gamesa wind turbine division. The layoffs are part of a broader effort to adjust to decreased demand in the wind energy market.

Official statements and context

Jochen Eickholt, CEO of the Gamesa division, explained the reasons for the layoffs in an internal letter:

  • Reduced activity in non-core markets
  • The need to streamline the company’s portfolio to match lower business volumes

“The leadership team and I are aware that today’s announcement is difficult, especially considering the challenges you’ve been facing over this past year,” Eickholt stated. However, he reassured employees of the wind business’s future, particularly the Onshore segment. He also mentioned that the company will shift employees to other roles and continue hiring in areas where demand is growing.

Impact in Canada

It remains unclear exactly how many Siemens employees in Canada will lose their job as a result of this layoff.
