As the Knowledge Management Lawyer at Samfiru Tumarkin LLP (“STLaw”), it is my pleasure to tell you more about our student program.
At STLaw, our students are valued members of the team. We offer a truly unique and immersive experience for our students, who will have unparalleled exposure to all aspects of the legal work performed at the Firm. As an STLaw student, you will not be relegated to performing research and drafting legal memorandum for weeks on end. Instead, you will work side by side with our team of legal professionals, including lawyers, paralegals, assistants, and clerks, communicate with clients, and play an integral role in the services we provide, all while becoming acquainted with the business side of law such as marketing and intake. In other words, you will be making a real difference in people’s lives, and in the process, you will learn what it truly means to act as an advocate in a legal setting.
In terms of day-to-day, our students are responsible for drafting pleadings and briefs, taking part in file strategy meetings, attending various appearances with the Firm’s lawyers, interacting directly with our clients, and much more. Our students often have carriage of small claims court matters and advocate on behalf of our clients from beginning to the end of a file (including trial). In addition, our students have the opportunity to accompany, observe and assist lawyers on discoveries, motions, mediations, pre-trials, trial, as well as appearances at Superior Court, Court of Appeal, and even the Supreme Court of Canada.
To some degree, you will decide what your experience will be as an STLaw student. You will be provided with formal training and mentorship to help get oriented, but we also expect you to take ownership of your experience and what you want to get out of it. The dynamic structure of the program allows you to shape your own experience with the Firm, as we will ensure that you are exposed to the types of matters and assignments in which you express a particular interest. We see our students as prospective lawyers at our Firm, and we provide a student experience that is aligned with that vision. With that in mind, our student program is designed to lay the foundation for your career as a litigator, a respected member of the bar, and a valued member of our Firm.
In conclusion, if you are interested in a unique, hands-on student experience that will provide mentorship from leaders in the fields of employment and disability/injury law, practical training, a great degree of autonomy, and the opportunity to personalize your own experience, look no further!
