Did CBS News Fire Scott Pelley?

Yes — “60 Minutes” veteran Scott Pelley is no longer with CBS News following a clash with the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton, on June 1, 2026.

“Your antipathy to the future of [60 Minutes] has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you,” Bilton said in a letter that was seen by CBC News.

Pelley, who’s been with the American broadcaster for nearly 40 years, was informed via the document that he’d been terminated for cause “effective immediately.”

Termination for Cause: Canada vs. The US

Canadian workers enjoy stronger job protections than their US counterparts, especially when it comes to firing staff for cause, because “at-will” employment doesn’t exist in Canada.

It’s extremely difficult for employers in the country to justify this type of dismissal, which is considered the “capital punishment” of employment law.

In most cases, non-unionized workers don’t meet the conditions necessary to be fired for cause — entitling them to full severance pay.
