3 Dead Following Serious Hwy. 17 Collision Northwest of Thunder Bay

3 people are dead following a serious collision on Highway 17 near Raith Ont. — a community northwest of Thunder Bay — on April 16, 2026.


What Happened?

  • Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) shut down the highway between Shabaqua Corners and Ignace following the collision, which took place around 3:30am ET on April 16.
  • “The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation, and Parks has attended to assist in the investigation and remediation of a load spill which does not pose a significant risk to the public,” OPP said in a news release.
  • Highway 17 was closed between Shabaqua Corners and Ignace for more than 24 hours.


Investigation Updates

The cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation. It’s unclear if charges are pending.
