A recent iA Financial Group-Leger survey found that Canadian employees want better access to obesity management services.

Here are the key findings from the survey:

  • 74% of respondents would participate in an employer-supported program if it were accessible, personalized, evidence-based, and affordable.
  • 55% of Canadians believe group insurance should include obesity management services.

“We realize that the more the level of obesity is high, the more there is an increase in absenteeism and presenteeism,” Eveline Keable, strategic leader at iA Financial Group’s Group Benefits and Retirement Solutions, told Human Resources Director (HRD).

“And at some point…the presenteeism becomes absenteeism.”

Another recent survey, conducted by Benefits Canada, found that 65% of plan members want access to weight loss medications as part of their benefits.

Disability Benefits for Obesity in Canada

Obesity and symptoms associated with obesity can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties.

For Canadians who can’t work, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.

How These Benefits Help

  • STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
  • LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.

To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.

Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving obesity — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
