Canadians Drinking More Alcohol than Pre-COVID Levels, 2026 CAMH Report Finds
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is sounding the alarm about how much alcohol Canadians are continuing to consume following the COVID-19 pandemic.
While overall consumption has dropped over the long term, the organization claims in a new report that adults are drinking higher quantities than they did pre-COVID.
“It’s not surprising that something that has such a significant impact on our interpersonal relations would would have that effect,” Dr. Leslie Buckley, a psychiatrist and chief of the Addictions Division at CAMH, told CBC News.
Health experts also noted that many provinces have made alcohol more convenient to buy.

Disability Benefits for Drug Addiction in Canada
Drug addiction (substance use disorder) can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties — even with appropriate treatment.
For Canadians who can’t work, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How These Benefits Help
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving drug addictions — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
