Health Canada Approves Pill Capable of Treating Postpartum Depression
What Happened?
Health Canada has approved “Zuranolone” — a pill designed by Biogen to treat postpartum depression.
“Although we have treatment options that can be effective for many who have postpartum depression, this will be the first drug that only needs to be taken for two weeks and has a rapid onset of a few days,” Dr. Crystal Clark told The Canadian Press.
Zuranolone, sold under the brand name Zurzuvae, is currently approved for use in the US, UK, and the European Union.
According to Health Canada’s website, 1-in-5 women experience a depression or anxiety disorder during or after pregnancy.

Disability Benefits for Depression in Canada
Depression can have a profound impact on an individual’s ability to perform their job duties — even with appropriate treatment.
For Canadians who can’t work, short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits can provide a crucial financial lifeline.
How These Benefits Help
- STD: Provides temporary financial support for individuals unable to perform their job duties.
- LTD: Offers income replacement for individuals unable to return to work for an extended period of time.
To qualify for STD or LTD benefits, medical documentation is essential to demonstrate how your condition prevents you from working.
Sadly, insurance companies often deny legitimate LTD claims — including in cases involving depression — adding unnecessary stress to an already difficult situation.
