Stellantis Shifting Jeep Compass Production to US, Affecting Ontario Jobs

What’s Happening at Stellantis?
Feeling the effect of the Canada-US trade war, Stellantis is moving Jeep Compass production from its Brampton assembly plant to Illinois — affecting hundreds of jobs in Ontario.
The Brampton facility has been shut down since early 2024 for retooling. However, that work was halted in February as US President Donald Trump began to threaten enhanced duties on Canadian goods.

Reaction from Canadian Leaders
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown
“This announcement represents a step backward from [Stellantis’] commitment to modernize and retool the Brampton facility — a commitment that gave its 3,000 workers and their families hope for a secure and sustainable future in auto manufacturing.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford
“This decision is especially painful for those workers who have been out of jobs for months…Stellantis has a duty to live up to their promise to Brampton autoworkers and continue with their allocation in Brampton. No provincial funding will be given until we receive clear assurances on when the plant will restart operations and meet that commitment.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney
“Canada’s new government will always be there for Canadian auto workers, who are foundational to the Canadian economy. Together with the Government of Ontario and Unifor, we are working with the company to develop the right measures to protect Stellantis employees and to create new opportunities for them in and around Brampton. We have further made clear that we expect Stellantis to fulfill the undertakings they have made to the workers of Brampton.”
