The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax-free federal payment for eligible people with disabilities aged 18 to 64. It supports people with lower incomes and is separate from CPP Disability, provincial assistance and private disability insurance.
For July 2026 to June 2027, the maximum payment is $204.20 per month. Your amount depends on your family’s income. You must have Disability Tax Credit approval and meet the other eligibility requirements.

Who Qualifies for the Canada Disability Benefit?
The main requirements are:
- Age: You are 18 to 64.
- DTC approval: The Canada Revenue Agency has approved you for the Disability Tax Credit.
- Tax residency: You are a Canadian resident for income tax purposes.
- Tax returns: You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed the required returns. Payments for July 2026 to June 2027 use the 2025 tax year.
- Status in Canada: You meet the program’s citizenship or immigration-status rules.
Qualifying statuses include Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected persons, people registered or entitled to registration under the Indian Act, and certain temporary residents who have lived in Canada throughout the previous 18 months.
Check the official CDB eligibility requirements for details and special situations.
Why Do You Need Disability Tax Credit Approval?
DTC approval is a requirement for the Canada Disability Benefit. If you have not been approved, start with our Disability Tax Credit guide.
The DTC assesses severe and prolonged limitations in specified daily activities, the combined effect of significant limitations, or qualifying life-sustaining therapy. A medical practitioner must certify the relevant effects of your impairment.
A diagnosis alone does not establish DTC eligibility. The application needs to explain how your condition affects everyday functioning. Being unable to work is not, by itself, the DTC test.
DTC approval can be useful even if you owe no income tax, because it can open access to the CDB. However, DTC approval and a CDB application are separate steps.
How Much Is the Canada Disability Benefit?
The maximum is $204.20 a month for July 2026 to June 2027, up from $200 in the previous benefit year. Not everyone receives the maximum.
The calculation considers your adjusted family net income, relationship status and working income. Higher income can reduce the payment to zero.
Can You Work and Receive CDB?
Yes. For July 2026 to June 2027, the calculation excludes up to $10,210 of working income for a single person, or $14,294 of combined working income for a couple. These exemptions are not the same as a total income limit.
What Is the $150 Supplemental Payment?
An additional $150 lump sum helps eligible recipients with the cost of obtaining DTC certification. It is not a monthly increase, and no separate application is required.
See the government’s CDB amounts and income rules.
How Do You Apply for the Canada Disability Benefit?
Apply through Service Canada. Applications can be made online, by phone, in person or using a printed form.
- Check your DTC approval and tax filings. Make sure you meet the requirements before applying.
- Gather your information. This includes your Social Insurance Number, status in Canada and, where required, mailing address. Have your direct deposit details ready if you want payments deposited into your account.
- Use your application code if you received one. A Service Canada invitation letter includes a code. You can still apply without a letter.
- Submit the application and keep a record. Contact Service Canada if you need to correct information or check its status.

When Are CDB Payments Made?
Regular payments are sent on the third Thursday of each month. If you qualify, payments generally start in the month after approval. Very small annual entitlements may be paid as one lump sum.
Use Service Canada’s CDB payment information and payment-date link to check the schedule.
Can You Receive Back Pay?
You may qualify for up to 24 months of back payments from the application date, but never for months before June 2025.
Do You Have to Reapply Every Year?
No. Eligibility is reviewed annually. Keep your DTC approval current, file the required tax returns and respond to Service Canada requests. Changes in income, family circumstances or eligibility can affect payments.
Is the Canada Disability Benefit Taxable?
No. CDB payments are tax-free and do not need to be reported as income on your tax return. You must still file your return to maintain eligibility.
Is CDB the Same as CPP Disability or the DTC?
No. These programs serve different purposes and have different eligibility rules.
| Benefit | What It Does | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Disability Benefit | Provides income-tested financial support. | DTC approval and the CDB’s other eligibility rules. |
| CPP Disability | Provides monthly benefits to eligible CPP contributors. | Enough contributions and a severe, prolonged disability that regularly prevents substantially gainful work. |
| Disability Tax Credit | Reduces income tax payable and can unlock access to other programs. | CRA approval based on qualifying impairment-related limitations or therapy. |
| LTD Insurance | Replaces part of your income under workplace or individual coverage. | The insurance policy’s disability definition and other terms. |
For example, CPP Disability approval does not replace the DTC approval required for CDB. If you are receiving provincial disability assistance, check that program’s rules about reporting CDB and its effect on your assistance.
How Does CDB Affect Long-Term Disability Insurance?
If you have LTD coverage, keep two questions separate: whether you qualify for CDB, and whether your insurer is entitled to change your insurance payments.
Do not assume a policy clause about CPP Disability also answers the CDB question. If an insurer proposes a deduction or repayment because you receive CDB, ask for:
- The exact policy wording it relies on.
- A written explanation of the proposed deduction.
- A calculation showing the amount and months involved.
An insurer’s calculation deserves scrutiny. Get advice about the policy and applicable rules before accepting a disputed reduction or repayment demand.
For the separate rules involving CPPD, read our guide to CPP Disability and long-term disability insurance.
What Can You Do if Your CDB Application Is Denied?
Read the decision letter to identify the problem. An eligibility issue, missing tax return or disagreement about the payment amount may need a different response.
You can ask Service Canada to reconsider a CDB decision. The request must generally be submitted within 180 days of the date on the decision letter. Explain what you disagree with and provide relevant supporting information.
If you disagree with the reconsideration decision, an appeal to the Social Security Tribunal may be available. Follow the instructions and deadlines for that stage.
See the official CDB reconsideration instructions. If the underlying issue is a DTC refusal, that is a separate CRA decision to address.
