Wrong-way crash on Hwy 401 near Kingston seriously injures two
Two drivers sustained serious injuries in a wrong-way collision on Highway 401 near Kingston on Tuesday, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Incident Details
- The crash occurred near the Gardiners Road exit shortly after 1 p.m.
- Officers from the OPP’s Frontenac detachment, along with City of Kingston Fire and Rescue and Frontenac Paramedics, responded to the scene.
- The collision involved a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes, resulting in a head-on crash with another vehicle.
Victim Information
OPP Const. Rob Martell reported that both drivers were initially transported to Kingston General Hospital in life-threatening condition.
- Later updates from the OPP indicated that one driver remains in critical condition, while the other’s injuries are no longer considered life-threatening.
- A child passenger in one of the vehicles was also taken to the hospital but did not suffer serious injuries.
Investigation Updates
The eastbound lanes of Highway 401, which were closed near Odessa due to the accident, reopened around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The OPP continues to investigate the cause of the collision.

Images from the crash site revealed significant fire damage, with charred pavement marking the intense fire that followed the collision. The express lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours as emergency services responded and cleared the scene. The lanes reopened around 7 a.m. on Friday morning.
