TC Transcontinental Layoffs: Plant Closures And Severance Pay
TC Transcontinental announced on October 14, 2026, that it will permanently close its printing plant in Owen Sound, Ontario, at the end of January 2027. Approximately 360 employees will be affected as the company moves production to other facilities across Canada.
The closure marks the end of a printing operation with generations of history in Owen Sound. TC Transcontinental says it will offer severance and career-transition support, with some employees potentially able to move to other company locations.
If you’re losing your job at TC Transcontinental, you could be owed up to 24 months’ severance pay. Your first offer may be much less than you’re entitled to, even if you’ve been given several months’ notice.
💡 Affected By TC Transcontinental Layoffs? Don’t assume the company’s first severance offer is everything you’re owed. Your age, years of service, position and ability to find another job can all affect your compensation. Contact Samfiru Tumarkin LLP before signing anything.

Latest TC Transcontinental Layoffs: Owen Sound Plant Closure
On October 14, 2026, TC Transcontinental confirmed plans to close its Owen Sound printing plant at the end of January 2027, affecting approximately 360 employees.
The company says it can now handle the plant’s work at other locations because of improvements across its printing network and changes in customer demand.
The Owen Sound facility, known as Transcontinental RBW Graphics, has been part of the company since 1992. Its roots in the community go back much further, making the closure a significant loss for local workers and their families.
According to local reporting, TC Transcontinental plans to transfer the plant’s work to five other facilities. The company is offering career-transition assistance, counselling and severance arrangements. Some employees may also be offered jobs elsewhere in its network.
The plant isn’t closing until January, but affected employees should find out what they’re owed now. Waiting until your final day could leave you less time to review your options.

Previous TC Transcontinental Layoffs And Plant Closures
The Owen Sound closure follows earlier changes to TC Transcontinental’s printing business, including the shutdown of other facilities as production moved across its network.
| Date | Location | What Happened |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Owen Sound, Ontario | Closure announced for January 2027, affecting approximately 360 employees. Read the Owen Sound closure report. |
| 2024 | Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec | Printing plant closure as the company adjusted its operations. |
| 2021 | Winnipeg, Manitoba | Printing facility closure affecting approximately 110 jobs, with production moved elsewhere. |
| 2019 | Brampton, Ontario | Printing plant closure, with work transferred to other facilities. |
TC Transcontinental continues to operate other facilities in Ontario and across Canada. The Owen Sound announcement doesn’t mean those locations are closing.
How Much Severance Could TC Transcontinental Employees Receive?
Non-unionized TC Transcontinental employees can be entitled to up to 24 months’ severance pay when they’re fired or laid off. The amount depends on their age, years of service, position, employment contract and ability to find similar work.
There’s no automatic rule that gives you one or two weeks of pay for every year you’ve worked. Someone who has spent 20 years at TC Transcontinental, for example, could be owed considerably more than 20 weeks of pay.
For Owen Sound employees, several things are especially important:
- Years of service: Long-serving employees can be owed substantial severance.
- Age: Older workers may have a harder time finding another job.
- Specialized experience: Press operators, maintenance technicians, production supervisors and other skilled workers may have fewer similar opportunities nearby.
- Local job market: Finding comparable work in Owen Sound could take longer than in a larger city.
- Total compensation: Benefits, bonuses and other regular compensation can affect what you’re owed.
Don’t assume TC Transcontinental’s first severance offer is the most you can receive. Have it reviewed before signing.
What If You’re Unionized?
If you’re represented by a union, your severance and termination rights are handled through your collective agreement and union representative.
The information on this page is primarily for non-unionized employees.
What Does The Owen Sound Closure Mean For Employees?
Just because TC Transcontinental is closing a plant doesn’t mean employees lose their right to severance. Even when a company has a legitimate reason to shut down, it still has to provide the compensation employees are owed.
Does Working Until January Mean You’re Getting Enough Severance?
Not necessarily. TC Transcontinental expects many Owen Sound employees to keep working until the plant closes in January 2027.
Even with several months’ notice, you could still be owed additional severance pay. Your age, years of service, position and ability to find another job all matter.
Don’t assume that working until the closure date means the company has met all its obligations.
What If TC Transcontinental Offers You A Job At Another Plant?
Some Owen Sound employees may be offered positions at other TC Transcontinental facilities.
You don’t automatically lose your severance rights by turning down a transfer. Whether refusing another job affects your compensation depends on the location, pay, duties and changes to your working conditions.
A job that requires moving to another city or making a much longer commute may not be a reasonable option for everyone.
Before accepting or refusing a transfer, find out how it could affect your severance.
What If Your Hours Or Pay Are Cut Before The Plant Closes?
If TC Transcontinental significantly reduces your pay, hours or responsibilities without your agreement, you may not have to accept those changes.
A major change to your job can amount to constructive dismissal, which could allow you to pursue severance before the plant closes.
What Should TC Transcontinental Employees Do Before Signing?
If you’re affected by the Owen Sound closure or another TC Transcontinental layoff, don’t rush to accept your first severance offer.
- Keep your paperwork. Save your termination letter, employment contract, severance offer and any release you’re asked to sign.
- Check your full compensation. Include your wages, benefits, pension contributions and bonuses, where applicable.
- Ask about any transfer offer. Find out whether accepting or refusing another job could affect your severance.
- Have your package reviewed. An employment lawyer can determine whether you’re owed more and help you pursue additional compensation.
⚠️ Don’t Rush To Sign: TC Transcontinental can’t erase your severance rights simply by giving you a short deadline to accept an offer. The offer itself may expire, however, and signing a valid release can prevent you from asking for more. Get advice before signing.
Can You Negotiate More Severance From TC Transcontinental?
Yes. You don’t have to accept the first offer if you’re owed more.
An employment lawyer can review your severance package and negotiate additional compensation. Many severance disputes are resolved without going to court.
