Sedan driver charged after scary Hwy. 416 collision in Ottawa’s south end

The operator of a grey sedan has been charged with careless driving after rear-ending a construction vehicle on Highway 416 in Ottawa’s south end.

• Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they responded to a collision in the southbound lanes of the highway past Brophy Drive before 9 a.m. ET on Oct. 29.
• Media relations officer Michael Fathi told CityNews Ottawa that a man driving a grey sedan saw a “crash truck”—which was protecting construction workers—at the last second and “tried to avoid it unsuccessfully.”
• A photo of the scene shared by police showed the grey sedan on its roof in a ditch beside the highway.
• The driver of the sedan—who had to be freed from the vehicle—was flown to hospital with serious injuries. However, their injuries aren’t considered to be life-threatening.
• Paramedics transported the driver of the crash truck to hospital with minor injuries.

Investigation updates

The driver of the grey sedan is facing a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction.

OPP said this is the second time in less than a week that a construction vehicle has been rear-ended.
