Salit Steel Niagara Falls Closure: Severance Pay & Employee Rights

A labyrinth of walkways, ladders and equipment in a massive manufacturing plant. Salit Steel employees are entitled to full severance pay when they lose their job.

Salit Steel announced on October 23, 2026, that it will permanently close its longtime Niagara Falls facility on Stanley Avenue. The company plans to sell the property after more than 120 years of operating in the city.

Salit Steel has already moved much of its manufacturing work to Welland. Remaining administrative, sales and other salaried positions are expected to move to other company locations. The company hasn’t confirmed a final closure date or how many current employees will lose their jobs.

Lost your job at Salit Steel? Whether you’re affected by the closure or terminated individually, your severance package may be worth more than your first offer. Non-unionized employees in Ontario can receive up to 24 months’ compensation.

💡 Before You Sign, Always Check First. Your Salit Steel severance package may not include everything you’re owed, especially if you’ve worked there for many years. Have us review your offer.

Salit Steel Closing Its Niagara Falls Facility

Salit Steel confirmed the closure on October 23, 2026, citing steel tariffs, slower residential construction and changes in the surrounding neighbourhood.

The company has made several changes to its Niagara operations:

  • October 23, 2026: Salit Steel announced plans to sell and permanently close its Stanley Avenue facility in Niagara Falls.
  • Earlier in 2026: Approximately 20 hourly employees moved from Niagara Falls to an upgraded facility in Welland.
  • Remaining operations: Administrative, sales and other salaried functions based in Niagara Falls will move to other company locations.

According to The Niagara Independent, the Stanley Avenue facility once employed approximately 150 people. That is a historical figure, not the number of employees affected by the current closure.

Salit Steel will continue operating elsewhere in Niagara, including Welland, Fort Erie, Thorold and Grimsby.

For non-unionized employees, the important question is whether their severance package reflects everything they’re owed.

How Much Severance Does Salit Steel Pay?

There is no single severance package that applies to every Salit Steel employee. What you’re owed depends on your age, years of service, position, compensation and employment contract.

Non-unionized employees in Ontario can receive up to 24 months’ compensation. That’s substantially more than the minimum amounts required under the Employment Standards Act.

Your severance package may need to include:

  • Regular wages or salary during your notice period.
  • Overtime, bonuses and other regular compensation.
  • Health, dental and other employment benefits.
  • Additional compensation based on your years of service, age and position.

Long-serving employees, supervisors and managers may be owed significantly more than their employer’s first offer.

What If Salit Steel Offers You A Transfer?

Salit Steel plans to move remaining office and salaried functions from Niagara Falls to other locations.

You don’t necessarily have to accept a transfer that significantly changes your employment.

A much longer commute, major pay cut, demotion or substantial change in responsibilities may amount to constructive dismissal.

However, refusing reasonable comparable work can affect your severance rights.

Get the new terms in writing before accepting or rejecting a transfer. Don’t resign.

What If You’re Unionized At Salit Steel?

Some Salit Steel employees in Niagara Falls are represented by the United Steelworkers.

If you’re unionized, your collective agreement governs your rights following a layoff, closure or transfer. Contact your union representative about severance, recall rights and any grievances.

Samfiru Tumarkin LLP’s employment lawyers represent non-unionized employees only in severance and wrongful dismissal matters.

What If Salit Steel Terminates You Outside The Closure?

You don’t need to be part of a plant closure or mass layoff to qualify for severance.

If Salit Steel eliminates your position or terminates you individually, you may still be owed compensation.

That includes non-unionized employees working in sales, administration, engineering, management and manufacturing.

Even if Salit Steel says you were fired for cause, that doesn’t automatically mean you lose your severance rights. Poor performance or a single workplace mistake often isn’t enough to deny severance.

Your rights don’t disappear because your termination wasn’t part of the Niagara Falls closure.

What Should You Do Before Signing A Salit Steel Severance Package?

  1. Get everything in writing. Keep your termination letter, employment agreement and proposed severance package.
  2. Review your full compensation. Your severance may include overtime, bonuses and benefits—not just regular wages.
  3. Have your offer reviewed. An employment lawyer can explain what you’re owed and whether there’s room to negotiate.

⚠️ A Signing Deadline Doesn’t End Your Rights. Salit Steel may give you a deadline to accept its severance offer, but that’s different from the legal deadline to pursue compensation. Signing a valid release typically prevents you from seeking more. Get advice before signing.

Having your severance reviewed doesn’t mean taking Salit Steel to court. We resolve the vast majority of severance disputes through negotiation.
