OPP: Distracted driving deaths up 40% from 2023
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) claim that fatal collisions caused by distracted driving are up 40 per cent compared to the same time last year.

- OPP say 63 people have been killed in collisions this year where inattentiveness was the main cause–up from 43 deaths in 2023.
- Sgt. Sami Nasr told CTV News that most of the cases have involved cellphones.
Advice from police
OPP are reminding motorists that distracted driving fines can be as high as $1,000 and include a three-day suspension for a first offence.
“You can use the touch-free features on the motor vehicle, but you just can’t touch your phone while driving,” Sgt. Nasr said.
